Mulvaney Wins in South Carolina’s 5th District

COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) _ Freshmen South Carolina U.S. Rep. Mick Mulvaney has defeated political newcomer Joyce Knott in South Carolina’s 5th Congressional District. The result means that all the state’s incumbent congressmen were returned to office Tuesday. With about 70 percent of the precincts reporting, Mulvaney had about 55 percent of the vote in the district reaching from Sumter County in the Midlands up to the North Carolina state line. Mulvaney says he wants to continue working in Washington to deal with the deficit and national debt. And he says the financial challenges facing the country are more than even most people in Congress realize. Knott, a small business owner and long-time Democrat, called Mulvaney part of a group creating gridlock in Congress because of their conservative views on spending issues.
