Columbia, S.C. (WCIV)–Judge Clifton Newman has requested a new judge handle any post-trial motions involving Alex Murdaugh’s murder charges, according to a Supreme Court of South Carolina filing made Thursday.

This comes after Murdaugh’s attorneys requested the Supreme Court prohibit Newman from adjudicating Murdaugh’s motion for a new trial- which is currently still pending in the Court of General Sessions in Colleton County- and from presiding over future trials.

Murdaugh’s next trial is still scheduled to proceed as planned on Nov. 27- with Judge Newman presiding- after Murdaugh’s motion to stay was denied.

This month’s trial in Beaufort County will look at the first set of charges related to his multimillion-dollar fraud and money laundering schemes.
