Raising the SC Coast Solution to Bigger, More Storms

CHARLESTON, S.C. (AP) _ A pair of scientists proposing an unusual idea for a world dealing with higher sea levels brought about by climate change: Raise the coastline. Environmental engineers Leonid Germanovich of Georgia Tech and Lawrence Murdoch of Clemson envision injecting a slurry with sediment into hydraulic fractures in the ground. When it’s repeated in adjacent areas and over a wide area, it would push up the surface of the earth. And while the math shows it’s possible, both scientists say there needs to be a lot more research about the idea. They published their findings in 2010 in the prestigious Proceedings of the Royal Society in the United Kingdom.
