Traffic Stop Leads to Meth Arrests

NEWBERRY COUNTY, S.C. (WOLO) — According to officials with the Newberry County Sheriff’s Department, two men are behind bars charged with trafficking meth and unlawfully carrying firearms following a traffic stop.

Newberry County deputies observed open containers of alcoholic beverages when the duo approached a public safety check point at Dreher Island Road and State Park Road.

The men, Jody Edward Miles, 40, of Columbia and Adam Burke Smithey, 36, of West Columbia were arrested for the open container violation and upon search of the vehicle the officers located approximately 45 grams of Methamphetamine, 2 pistols (a Glock .40 caliber and a Taurus .380), $134, and a set of digital scales, officials say.

Miles is charged with Trafficking Methamphetamine, Unlawful Carrying a Pistol, Open Container, and Possession of Drug Paraphernalia.

He was released after posting a $25,000 bond on March 31.

Smithey is charged with Trafficking Methamphetamine, Unlawful Carrying a Pistol, Open Container, and Possession of Drug Paraphernalia.

Smithey has a $25,000 bond, but remains in custody at the Newberry County Detention Center.

Officials say he is also being held for Lexington County for outstanding charges in their jurisdiction.
