Watch: Colleagues Remember Superintendent Bennie Bennett

Columbia , S.C. (WOLO) — On Tuesday, Newberry County district officials remembered their friend and colleague,  Superintendent Bennie Bennett. Bennett was killed in a car accident Saturday night.

In a press conference, several of Bennett’s colleagues said they will remember Bennett for his dedication to his students.

“He was an advocate for his students,” said Jim Suber, Assistant Superintendent of Operations and Administration.

Bennett served as Newberry County District Superintendent for roughly a decade, pursuing his passion of educating children and building professional and trustworthy relationships with his colleagues, who call Bennett a true leader.
“I’ve never met a man that has been as fair to everyone that he’s dealt with,” said Jody Hamm, Board Chair. “He has spoken to many groups, he’s spoken to kids that have come in contact with him because of some disciplinary issues, he’s spoken to the parents that aren’t happy and every one of those groups leaves with the same respect that he has awarded them.”
Bennett’s life was cut short in a tragic two-car collision this past weekend but wearing red and black ribbons in his honor his colleagues promise he will never be forgotten.
“I am totally convinced that we will honor his legacy by moving forward weathering the storm and finish what he so graciously started,” said Suber.
Funeral services for Bennett will be Saturday, April 23rd at 1:30 pm at Pineville AME Zion Church in Rock Hill, South Carolina. Visitation and the viewing will be Thursday, April 21, 2016 from 4-8 at Mid-Carolina High School Gymnasium.
