Watch: SC Party Chairmen Weigh in on Trump as Presumptive GOP Nominee
Columbia, S.C. (WOLO) — A race that started out with 17 candidates in search of the GOP nomination has been narrowed down to just one, Donald Trump.
During his victory speech following the Indiana primary Trump said, “We’re going to win, we’re going to win in November and we’re going to win big and it’s going to be America first.”
But South Carolina Democratic Chairman Jaime Harrison says a Trump presidency is the last thing the nation needs.
According to Harrison, “This guy is a very dangerous, dangerous guy. He’s not the person that we want to have the nuclear codes, he doesn’t have the political temperament or intellect or patience to really sit in that oval office.”
Despite some strong objections, including Governor Nikki Haley’s previously outspoken opposition to the presumptive GOP nominee, Republican Chairman Matt Moore is adamant that Trump is superior to any alternative.
“President Hilary Clinton, are the three words that unite all republicans across the country. So whether you like him or dislike him or like another candidate in the race we cannot let Hilary Clinton have a third term for president Barack Obama,” explains Moore.
Both Chairmen agree, the candidate pool could have a significant impact on the Palmetto state’s voter turn out this fall.
According to Moore Trump’s fresh, unique outlook is what voters in the traditionally Republican state have been begging for.
Moore tells ABC Columbia, “They wanted someone outside the political process they wanted a political outsider Donald Trump is that political outsider.”
While Harrison argues that South Carolinians would be better served by a president with a political background.
“Both of our candidates have experience. Sanders has been in the house and the the senate, he’s been a mayor. Hilary Clinton, I don’t think we’ve had a presidential candidate with as much political experience as she has. That type of gravitas is something that’s missing from Donald Trump,” says Harrison.
Looking ahead to the general election a new CNN-ORC national poll shows democratic front runner Hilary Clinton leading Donald Trump by double digits.
