South Carolina Bar AssociationCOLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) – A federal prosecutor is being installed as the new president of the South Carolina Bar Association.

William Witherspoon will be sworn in Thursday as the group’s president during the Bar’s House of Delegates meeting in Columbia. South Carolina Chief Justice Costa Pleicones (Pluh-KON-us) will administer the oath, and Witherspoon will address the House on initiatives for the coming year.

Witherspoon has worked for the U.S. Attorney’s Office for 16 years. He’s previously been employed in the Office of General Counsel for the Budget and Control Board and also as an attorney in private practice.

The Bar says Witherspoon also clerked for state and federal judges and worked as a chemist and sheriff’s deputy prior to graduating from the University of South Carolina School of Law.
