South Carolina Jobless Rate Climbs Slightly in April

oburgjobs14.jpgCOLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) – South Carolina’s unemployment rate has edged up slightly for the second time in more than a year and a half.

The Department of Employment and Workforce said Friday the state’s jobless rate was 5.8 percent in April, up from 5.7 percent in March.

Officials attributed the increase to the more than 10,000 people who entered the state’s labor force, which rose to more than 2.3 million. State officials said the number of people working in South Carolina increased to a record last month, rising by more than 7,000 to nearly than 2.2 million.

Unemployment was highest in Allendale County at 9.1 percent. Lexington County had the state’s lowest jobless rate, at 4.3 percent.

When state unemployment inched up in March, it was the first increase since September 2014.
