Fireflies Fall to 0-2 After All-Star Break

Green JacketsCOLUMBIA, SC (Fireflies) — Columbia lost a lopsided game to the Augusta GreenJackets, 19-7, on Friday night at Spirit Communications Park. Patrick Mazeika and Johnny Magliozzi – both Bay Staters – were the bright spots for the home team. Mazeika bashed his first home run of the season and Magliozzi extended his scoreless-innings streak out of the bullpen to 10.

Augusta (2-0, 38-34) used a seven-run second inning to take a commanding lead. Jalen Miller hit a three-run homer over the left-field wall and Skyler Ewing smoked a grand slam beyond the right-field fence.

Mazeika’s two-run blast off of GreenJackets righty Cory Taylor (W, 6-2) put Columbia (0-2, 36-36) on the board in the bottom half of the second inning. The visitors still claimed a 9-2 advantage.

Augusta scored eight more runs in the eighth frame. The GreenJackets smacked three doubles in the half inning to help pad their lead.

The Fireflies compiled a small rally in their final chances at the plate. Columbia scored five runs thanks to Vicente Lupo’s run-scoring double and triple and Luis Ortega also drove in two with a single.

Chase Ingram (L, 4-6) took the loss for Columbia.

Game three of the four game series is on Saturday at 7:05 p.m. The Fireflies lean on left-hander Kevin Canelon (4-4, 3.09) to square off against Augusta southpaw Domenic Mazza (1-0, 5.23).
