First over-the-counter birth control pill heads to stores

(CNN)– The first over-the-counter birth control pill approved in the U.S. is available in stores and online this month.

Opill can be bought directly from its own website in the coming days but it could take a few weeks for the medication to reach pharmacy shelves.

Manufacturer Perrigo has a suggested retail price of $20 for a one month supply and $50 for a three month supply.

The company says when taken as directed Opill is 98% effective at preventing pregnancy.

That’s in line with the effectiveness of most birth control pills.
