$12.5 billion in online scams were reported to the FBI last year

(CNN)– Online scams cost people billions of dollars last year.

The FBI in a new report reveals a record 12-and-a-half billion dollars in losses were reported in 2023.

The bureau says that was fueled by a surge in cryptocurrency investment fraud.

Last year’s total losses from same were more than two-billion-dollars higher than reported in the year prior.

And it represents the highest tally of losses from digital scams since the bureau began reporting on that topic more than two decades ago.
