Norfolk Southern held safety training for possible train collisions

COLUMBIA, S.C. (WOLO)– According to the U.S. Department of Transportation, more than 21 hundred collisions happened last year alone at railroad crossings.

On Wednesday, March 20, Norfolk Southern trained local emergency responders at the rail yard on Shop Road about how to react to a train accident.

A recent Operation Lifesaver study found that South Carolina ranks 10th in the nation for train collisions.

Many trains that pass through Columbia carry chemicals with some of them being hazardous, so time is of the essence in case of an emergency.

In the event of a train accident in your area, the fire department urges you check their social media pages for the best plan of action.
