Inmate dead after being found unresponsive in early morning hours

SUMTER, S.C. (WOLO)– An inmate has been pronounced dead after being found unresponsive in the early morning hours, say Sumter County deputies.

According to the Sumter County Sheriff’s Office Detention Center, the inmate was found in the early morning of Wednesday, April 3.

Officials say in the morning inmates were woken up for breakfast when a detention center officer found George Anderson unresponsive.

Then officers attempted to render aid to him before EMS took him to Prisma Health Tuomey.

Anderson was later pronounced deceased at the hospital. Officials say he had an extensive medical history and had recently been released from a medical facility.

His cause of death has not been determined yet. SLED has been requested by Sheriff Anthony Dennis to assist in the investigation.
