Sumter, SC (WOLO) —-  Sumter police are investigating a shootout they say claimed the life of an innocent driver caught in the crossfire. Police say the incident took place between two cars Monday as they were driving along North Purdy street near Broad street around 12:30 in the afternoon.

As officers were responding to reports of shots, they learned that third car that was not engaged in the exchange veered off the road after suffering what police say appeared to be a gunshot wound.  Authorities say the driver of that car was treated at the scene and then taken to a local hospital but died from his injures Tuesday afternoon. Officials say an autopsy is being scheduled by the Sumter County Coroner’s Office.

Authorities are asking anyone who may have witnessed anything, or has knowledge about the incident, especially a description of the vehicles involved in the shooting is urged to contact the Sumter Police Department by calling (803)436-2700. You can always submit a tip anonymously by calling Crime Stoppers at 1888-CRIME-SC.
