South Carolina ranks fourth for skipping work to watch sports, survey finds

Folks who live in South Carolina love their sports.

At least that is what a study that looked at the states with people most likely to call out of work sick to attend a sporting event. In the study, South Carolina ranked fourth among states that skip work to watch sports with 65% of people admitting to doing so, according to Betway USA‘s survey of more than 2,000 Americans.

The top 10 states on the list in order are the following:

  1. Utah with 78% of respondents.
  2. Colorado with 70% of respondents.
  3. Maryland with 67% of respondents.
  4. South Carolina with 65% of respondents.
  5. California with 65% of respondents.
  6. Texas with 65% of respondents.
  7. Kansas with 64% of respondents.
  8. Illinois with 63% of respondents.
  9. Florida with 62% of respondents.
  10. Tennessee with 62% of respondents.

As for the sport most people are willing to call out of work to miss, football remains king.

Forty-eight percent of respondents said the Super Bowl was the event they called out of work to watch or attend.

The survey used 2,014 respondents ages 21 and older. It was conducted in March 2024. Some states were removed from analysis due to lack of sufficient data.
