Baby Found in Dumpster Puts Spotlight Back on Daniel’s Law

COLUMBIA, S.C. (WOLO) The Claflin student who left her newborn baby in a dumpster has brought attention back to the issues of infant abandonments. I spoke with officials who want parents to know there are better options out there.

“Daniel’s Law is the safe Haven’s act and it was established so that mother’s who were in a bad situation or who did not desire to keep their babies could have a safe place to take their babies without any sort of prosecution,” said Department of Social Services Region II Director Dawn Barton.

DSS said on average, they have about three abandonment cases per year. Two cases were brought to their attention in the past two months.
