Crews extinguish fire at mall demolition site

Columbia, S.C. (WOLO)– Columbia-Richland Fire Department says the fire on Forest Drive has been extinguished and there were no reported injuries.
Workers at the demolition site were reportedly cutting metal in the old mall when the fire got started.
Traffic on Forest Drive is now back open in both directions near Beltline Blvd.

ORIGINAL STORY (POSTED: July 10, 2024):
Columbia, S.C. (WOLO)– Fire crews with the Columbia Richland Fire Dept. responded to the demolition site at the old Richland Fashion Mall Wednesday afternoon.
Officials say a debris pile at the corner of the building caught fire around 3:30 in the afternoon.
Forest Dr. was closed in both directions near Beltline Blvd. as crews battled the blaze.
At last check, firefighters say conditions at the mall are improving with a bulk of the fire having been knocked down.
No injuries have been reported.
The cause remains under investigation.
