SC Lawmakers React to Travel Ban

COLUMBIA, S.C. (WOLO)- Local legislators sharing their thoughts about the President’s travel ban. Some say it is a form of discrimination while others are saying he is just trying to protect our country.

Strong reaction from both Democratic and Republican lawmakers. Democratic Representative Todd Rutherford is calling on leaders from the Republican Party  to take action.

“President Trump, since he’s been elected, has done some of the most racist things that I’ve seen in any presidency so far. We were all very hopeful that when he got elected, maybe he was going to walk back some of the rhetoric, but he apparently believes that applause lines make good policy. We simply know better. I think most Republicans, unfortunately, know better but are afraid to say so,” said Rutherford.

Republican Representative Nathan Ballentine maintains the president is sticking to his campaign promises. “I think the president is doing exactly what he campaigned on, exactly what he said he was going to do. He’s putting America first. He wants to protect our borders and he made that no secret during the campaign. Could it have been done a certain way, sure. Would people not like it whatever way he rolled it out, certainly,” said Ballentine.

Both representatives commend Senators Lindsey Graham and Tim Scott for saying they would assist Clemson graduate Nazanin Zinouri return home.
