Air Quality Advisory Issued For Newberry Area Due to Landfill Fire

NEWBERRY, S.C. (WOLO)- An Air Quality Advisory has been issued for Newberry area by Newberry County Emergency Management due to landfill fire Sunday.

Due to the fire at a construction debris landfill off SC 121 near Belfast Rd., Newberry County Emergency Management has asked for those with breathing conditions and that are in a five mile area, especially low lying areas, are asked to remain inside.
Winds are variable but prominently out of Southwest at approximately 11mph. This would carry the smoke near the City of Newberry and the onward toward SC 34 and US 176 then onto the Broad River area.
DHEC, Newberry County Haz Mat, and Emergency Services are monitoring air quality closely.
Anyone with respiratory issues and within a five mile area Northeast from the site should use precaution.

Fire crews across Newberry were working a large landfill fire off SC Highway 121 near Belfast Road Sunday morning.

Firefighters have been on the scene since for hours working to contain and extinguish the fire. Due to the fire and current weather conditions, smoke is crossing several areas of Newberry County.

Fire Departments and Rescue Squads from across Newberry County are on the scene and will stay there until the fire is eliminated.
