Killer Charged in 30-Year-Old Murder
RICHLAND COUNTY, S.C. (WOLO) – A 53-year-old man already serving four life sentences for murder confessed to another murder that occurred in 1987.
Phillip Johnson is charged in the shooting death of Patricia Ann Green on May 10, 1987, Sheriff Lott said during a press conference Wednesday morning.
Lott said Green’s family now has closure, but it is still a healing process.
Investigators were able to use DNA to charge Johnson with the crime.
On that fateful day, deputies discovered the body of Green, 34, in a drainage ditch off of Highway 378 in Sumter, just a few hundred feet from the main entrance of McIntire Air Base.
Phillip Johnson was charged and interviewed, and confessed to the crime.
Lott in addition to the life sentences Johnson is also serving time for other offenses that occurred in Sumter County and the City of Sumter in and around the same time frame Green was killed.
