Study Shows SC as Fifth Worst State for DUI
COLUMBIA, S.C. (WOLO)- A study released by backgroundchecks.org reports South Carolina as the fifth worst state in the country when it comes to driving under the influence.
“Part of the reason is that certainly, when you look at other state’s laws, we definitely have a long way to go,” began MADD SC Program Director Steven Burritt. “For a state that has consistently been in the bottom of the rankings you’d think that we would be jumping at the opportunities to except some of the laws that other states have done yet every year we continue to make very little progress on DUI reform.”
Joy Blakley has experienced the devastating affects of driving under the influence firsthand. In 2011, a drunk driver struck her ex-husband David, killing him instantly, and her son Trey who went airborne and died a day later in the hospital.
Shortly after the accident, Joy was contacted by Mothers Against Drunk Driving South Carolina. Today she is an advocate for the group, remaining dedicated to ending driving while impaired.
