Tropical Storm Andrea Misses the Midlands

COLUMBIA, S.C. (WOLO) — Thursday evening when Tropical Storm Andrea was rolling in, plans to prepare were going out. “Anytime a tropical system forms and could potentially affect South Carolina, one of the first things we do is we make sure everybody has the same information and as much information as possible about the developing storm,” says Derrec Becker, Spokesperson, South Carolina Emergency Management Division. Sandbags were out in Five Points as everyone prepared for heavy rain and possible flooding. But, when Friday morning rolled around all we found were puddles. The sandbags were still out and so were a few umbrellas. But, residents were still shopping and we even found a few people wearing flip-flops. We also went over to Olympia and again we found standing water. So, it appears the Midlands missed the brunt of the storm. However, officials say don’t count out the rest of the season. “This is still a good wake up call for everyone in the state to take this as an opportunity to do a little bit of emergency planning, look around your house to see if there are any supplies that you need to keep in hand,”says Becker Because, while we may have been lucky this time, never say never.
