Sumter Woman Attempts to Burn Down Home With Family Inside

SUMTER, SC (WOLO)- A Sumter County woman is in jail after attempting to burn down her home with family members inside Saturday afternoon.

Willie Mae McQuilla, 67, is charged with one count of arson and three counts of attempted murder.

Sumter County Deputies responded to a call about a house fire around 4:45 p.m.

As deputies and firefighters arrived on the scene more calls came in identifying McQuilla as the suspect.

A deputy recognized McQuilla and stopped to question her. McQuilla reportedly admitted to setting the house on fire and barricading the doors.

Family members were able to escape without injury.

Sumter County EMS made contact with the Red Cross to assist the family.

McQuilla is being held in the Sumter-Lee Regional Detention Center awaiting a bond hearing scheduled on Sunday, May 14th at 8 a.m.
