RCSD: 14-year-old charged with involuntary manslaughter

RICHLAND COUNTY, S.C. (WOLO)– According to the Richland County Sheriff’s Department, a 14-year-old has been charged with involuntary manslaughter.

The 14-year-old was arrested in connection to the shooting death of a 15-year-old.

Law enforcement say the investigation into the suspicious shooting death established that the victim had been visiting a friend’s home in the 100 block of Hunting Avenue in Hopkins.

During the visit, the friend, the 14-year-old, was handling a handgun near the victim, say deputies.

Also, investigators say while the teen was attempting to clear the weapon, the handgun discharged a single bullet that hit the victim in the upper body which led to the victim’s death.

The investigation revealed that the 14-year-old juvenile was at fault, says RCSD.

He is facing charges of involuntary manslaughter and illegal possession of a weapon by a minor.

The investigation into the origin of the handgun is still under investigation.
