Spurrier Responds To Richt’s Clowney Comments

COLUMBIA, S.C. (WOLO) — Gamecock head football coach Steve Spurrier responded Wednesday to Mark Richt’s recent comments on Jadeveon Clowney. Speaking at a UGA fan event on Monday, the Georgia head football coach shared his thoughts on South Carolina’s star player. “I would say Clowney is the best football player in the world though. Seriously. I think he might be the very best player who exists today, at any level,” said Richt. Spurrier was a guest on The Jim Rome Radio Show Wednesday and was asked about Richt’s comments. “That was a little strong right there,” said Spurrier. “Obviously Jadeveon is probably, you know, the best defensive linemen in college football, I think everyone agrees with that. But when you start putting the linemen in there with the quarterbacks and receivers and running backs… I don’t know what he’s trying to say. But if he’s trying to sort of fatten up Jadeveon’s thinking, I hope it doesn’t work. Jadeveon has had a lot of praise, a lot of attention the entire off-season and I think he’s handled it pretty well. He tries to stay out of the limelight, he’s doesn’t go to the clubs, he’s not out in public much except when he has to go to class and so forth. I think he’s handled it well.” Spurrier added that football is a team sport and the Gamecocks won’t be able to have a successful season with just one great player. “It is not a one man show. If we are going to have a big year the entire team is going to have to play well,” said Spurrier.
