Children of ex-USC coach Carlen sue over will

COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) — Three adult children of Jim Carlen say the late University of South Carolina football coach’s second wife orchestrated a revision of his will that cut them out of his $10 million estate.

The State of Columbia reports (http://bit.ly/1ecF4Km ) that the children have filed a petition asking a probate court to invalidate a 2010 will and replace it with a 2007 version.

Carlen suffered from severe dementia and Alzheimer’s and died in 2012 at the age of 79. He led the Gamecocks from 1975 to 1981, compiling a 46-36-1 record and coaching the school’s lone Heisman Trophy winner, George Rogers.

His children say Carlen’s post-football life included business interests in the fields of real estate, banking and franchise operation. In all, he amassed assets worth more than $10 million.
