Johnson completes thrilling comeback, first in FedEx Cup

OLD WESTBURRY, N.Y. (WOLO) – Dustin Johnson overcame what was once a five-shot deficit, trailing Jordan Spieth during his Sunday round as each shared the final pairing.

By the end of 72, then 73 holes, it was Johnson alone as the champion of The Northern Trust.

The Irmo native won his fourth tournament of the season in the first leg of the FedEx Cup, his fourth title in 41 playoff events ever held. The Dutch Fork alum shot a 4-under 66 Sunday, forcing a playoff by sinking an 18 foot par putt on the 18th hole.

Johnson and Spieth, even at 13-under for the event, replayed the final hole at Glen Oaks Club, where DJ uncorked a 341 yard drive, leading to a short pitch that left him four feet away from his victorious birdie.

Spieth (-1, 69 Sunday) shot a par on the first and only playoff hole.

Johnson now leads the FedEx Cup standings with just three events left in the PGA Tour’s season. First place at the end of the TOUR Championship in September will be awarded a $10 million prize.
