USC freshmen read, hear from ‘Postmortal’ author

COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) — The University of South Carolina’s incoming freshmen are hearing from the author of a novel about a supposed cure for aging.

Author Drew Magary addresses students Monday at the Carolina Coliseum. Magary’s book “The Postmortal” deals with the social, ethical and political issues of an imaginary society where aging can be cured.

University spokeswoman Megan Sexton says students will form groups to discuss the book with faculty and staff leaders.

Sexton says this is the 20th year the university has organized the event, in which all freshmen share a common academic experience during their first week on campus.

There are nearly 4,900 freshmen this year.
