What makes a Gamecock Tailgate?

COLUMBIA, S.C. (WOLO) — Thursday night brought the first game of the 2013 football season for the South Carolina Gamecocks and along with it came the first tailgate.

ABC Columbia toured the old state farmers market to find out what makes a Gamecock tailgate.

Some fans say it’s the food.

“The first thing you need for a good tailgate is good barbeque and chicken,” says Bill Woods, Gamecock fan.

While we were out we found a variety of tailgating menus, from chicken to sausage dogs and low country boils to finger foods.

We also found a former Gamecock football favorite, Sheldon Brown. Brown, who comes back often, was tailgating in his RV.

“This place to me is second to none,” says Brown.

Other tailgaters say the key to a good tailgate is knowing when to go, where to park and making sure to take your friends.

We also asked fans why Gamecocks are so good at tailgating.

“We practiced and practiced and practiced when the teams weren’t doing so good,” says Woods.

He also says the Gamecocks have never lost a tailgate and the fans don’t plan on doing so anytime soon.
