Greek Festival Organizers Plan to Donate a Portion of Proceeds to Hurricane Victims

COLUMBIA, S.C. (WOLO)- People who attend Columbia’s Greek Festival say the event is great for the community.

The festival not only aims to bring together people in Columbia, but organizers also use the festivities to help others around the world.

“We give $60,000 from the festival proceeds each year to charity. Now we want to want to give to the hurricane, we want to help hurricane victims,” said Greek Festival Director Mary Rickman.

Many people come out to enjoy the array of authentic greek food but longtime volunteers say the festival has other activities to take advantage of as well.

“Dancing music. We have a band inside and a band outside. We have our Greek dancers from our community and our traditional costumes that were handmade by the ladies and they dance about every 10-15 minutes of the festival inside and outside,” said Festival Chairperson Niki Stewart.

The festival runs from 10 a.m. through 10 p.m. on Thursday, Friday and Saturday and ends at 4 p.m. on Sunday, September 17th.
