COLUMBIA, S.C. (WOLO) – Three people were arrested when protests turned violent Monday night on Georgia Tech’s campus after a vigil for a student who was fatally shot by campus police.
Investigators said police shot and killed Scout Schultz late Saturday night after a 21-year-old student called 911 to report an armed and possibly intoxicated suspicious person who fit Schultz’s physical description.
Police said an officer shot Schultz after the student refused to drop a knife.
Family attorney L. Christ Stewart said Schultz was barefoot and “disoriented,” in the middle of a “mental breakdown.” Stewart also accused the officer who opened fire of overreacting.
He accused the school of pushing a narrative that Schultz was a “knife-wielding” threat despite evidence suggesting otherwise.
University spokesman Lance Wallace said in a statement that after the vigil, a group of about 50 protesters marched to the campus police department.
He said one police vehicle was damaged and two officers suffered minor injuries, with one taken to a hospital for treatment.
Wallace says the protesters who were arrested are being charged with inciting a riot and battery of an officer.
Videos on social media showed smoke coming from the police car, with crowds of people on the streets.
Monday night, Georgia Tech officials urged students to stay indoors because of violent protests on campus.
