2 Die in Berkeley County Police Chase Wreck
SUMMERVILLE, S.C. (AP) _ Authorities say the driver of a car and his passenger died in a crash during a police chase after they refused to stop at a traffic checkpoint in Berkeley County.
Investigators said the car sped through the checkpoint used to confirm driver’s licenses and spot possible drunken drivers on U.S. Highway 17-A around 11:55 p.m. Wednesday.
Authorities say several officers had to jump out of the way of the 1998 Pontiac Bonneville, and other officers started to chase the vehicle.
Investigators say 52-year-old Gerald Washington lost control of the car and it crashed into a tree. The coroner’s office says he died, along with 50-year-old Dwayne Pierce.
Charleston County deputies are investigating the wreck because state troopers and Berkeley County deputies were involved in the chase.
