COLUMBIA, S.C. (WOLO)  —  After nearly 15 years, in the heart of downtown Columbia, what has become a cultural mainstay, Mac’s on Main, is closing its doors.

From humble beginnings in 1998-2000, as a computer guy, Barry Walker, turned “Chef Fatback,” and his wife Susan, carved out a culinary culture Columbia’s Main Street had not ever seen.

“We became an institution, an icon, a destination,” said Walker.

Everybody who’s anybody has graced the tables of Mac’s on Main, partaking in southern fried goodness by day and smooth jazz and blues by night, courtesy of Fatback and the Groove Band.

However, Walker says, it’s time to move on.

“He’s gone bankrupt, he’s left the country. Nah, this is a good thing, a great thing.  I’ve carried the Mac’s on Main brand as far as I can take it here.  It’s time to move to the next phase.”

The CEO/musician/chef/Irmo Town Councilman will now focus on Mac’s on Main catering and manufacturing and distributing frozen peach cobblers.  Peach cobbler has become the restaurant’s signature dish.

The cobbler is currently in 180 retailers in North Carolina, South Carolina and Georgia. Walker plans to have the product in two more grocery stores by the end of the year.

The building in the 1700 hundred block of Main Street will house new owners, CW’S Grill, October 1.
