Copper thief hits Spartanburg area church 3rd time

SPARTANBURG, S.C. (AP) — A Spartanburg County church has been hit by copper thieves three times in four days.

WYFF-TV reported (http://bit.ly/pgdJnU ) members of Whitney Baptist Church just outside Spartanburg discovered the thefts Sunday, Monday and Wednesday.

Claude Thomason says he had stayed at the church Tuesday night hoping to catch the thieves, but no one came by the building.

The only unit left is the one that cools the sanctuary.

Thomason says he worries the church might have to close if the unit for the sanctuary is hit. He says the church usually has less than two dozen people at the Sunday service and they won’t be able to afford repairs.

The church was founded in 1889.
