Carolina Calls: Spurrier On Bye Week

COLUMBIA, S.C. (WOLO) — South Carolina head football coach Steve Spurrier held his weekly call-in radio show Thursday night at the Wild Wing Cafe in Columbia.

The Gamecocks are in a bye week after beating Vanderbilt 35-25 last Saturday night at Williams-Brice Stadium.

Notes:

-Spurrier said the Gamecocks are off until next Monday, but have practiced well this week. 

-Says he has installed some new plays to get ready for Central Florida next Saturday.

-Spurrier addressed Jadeveon Clowney and Chaz Sutton’s foot injuries and said he didn’t think the injuries were anything to worry about. “I think by game time they’ll all be ready to play. We haven’t spoken about any injury really this week. Cody Waldrop will be back in practice next week,” said Spurrier.

-Says ESPN personality Lee Corso called him this week to commend him for helping support Curing Kids Cancer. Corso is the national chairman of the organization. (For more information on the organization, please visit their website: www.curingkidscancer.org.)

-Spurrier says the back up receivers and starting tight ends haven’t had many opportunities yet. “It’s a long season and hopefully those guys will get more opportunities.”

-Spurrier said he wanted to give the fans a break for leaving the Vanderbilt game early last Saturday. “I want to give the fans a little bit of a reprieve. That game the other night, I got bored, too,” said Spurrier. 

-Spurrier believes the Vanderbilt game will pay-off for the Gamecocks, because it gave them, “A good scare.”

-He said South Carolina looked as good as any team in the national in the first part of the Vanderbilt game. “I thought gosh, is this the night we score 50? But then the bad plays started happening,” said Spurrier.

 -Spurrier said the defense is decent but he knows they can get better. Says Cedrick Cooper will be 100 percent by the UCF game. A caller asked why Sidney Rhodes doesn’t play defense, Spurrier said that was a good question and said he will ask the defensive coaches why tomorrow.

-A caller asked if Jadeveon Clowney is losing confidence in himself because he isn’t living up to the hype, “He’s played pretty similarly to what he’s done last year,” said Spurrier.

-Spurrier said he was told the Kentucky game is sold out.

-He was asked about his visor-throwing moment during the Vanderbilt game, when it appeared he was upset with defensive line coach Deke Adams. Spurrier said it didn’t have anything to do with Adams, he was upset with defensive coordinator Lorenzo Ward’s call on fourth and six. He said Ward made plenty of good calls in the game, but he was upset about that one in particular. “I thought Ward coached a super game last week,” said Spurrier.
