College Football World Weighs In On Clowney

COLUMBIA, S.C. (WOLO) — You couldn’t turn on ESPN Monday without seeing someone weighing in with an opinion on Jadeveon Clowney. 

The junior All-American surprised Gamecock coaches before the Kentucky game when he informed them he would not play because of a strained muscle near his rib cage.

“The inmates are running the asylum at this point,” 1991 Heisman Trophy winner Desmond Howard said on College Football Live.  “I thought I would never see the day that a player would tell Steve Spurrier, ‘Yeah, Coach, I’m going to sit this one out.  I think y’all can handle it without me today.”

The Clowney talk continued on Around the Horn.  “We all know that if this were the NBA, he’d be in the NBA,” retired Boston Globe columnist Bob Ryan said.  “He doesn’t want to be (at USC), and his relationship with Spurrier is basically bizarre.  It probably doesn’t even exist.”

Outside the Lines started its Monday show with a segment called Clowney Conundrum.  “I don’t think Spurrier can ever trust Clowney again,” Charleston Post & Courier columnist Gene Sapakoff said.  “This is really a fractured thing.  Steve Spurrier’s got enough problems on his hands with a defense that can’t close games and three road games coming up.
