Police officer Chared with DUI

CHARLESTON, S.C. (AP) _ A Charleston County jail officer has been charged with drunken driving.

Authorities say 51-year-old Anthony Middleton of Charleston was stopped on Interstate 26 about 3 a.m. Sunday by a sheriff’s deputy who saw Middleton’s vehicle swerving in the traffic lanes. Maj. Jim Brady says the deputy noticed that Middleton smelled like alcohol, slurred his speech and had bloodshot eyes. He then failed field-sobriety tests.

Middleton was booked into the jail where he works Sunday morning and released. He refused to take a breath test.

Brady says Middleton has been placed on unpaid administrative leave pending an investigation into the arrest. Middleton is charged with first offense driving under the influence.
