Over 160,000 new residents in South Carolina, new census data shows

Myrtle Beach, S.C. (WPDE)–Updated census numbers showed that between 2019 and 2023, 161,385 new South Carolina residents came from other states!

Certain counties in urban areas and along the coast saw dramatic increases in growth, according to the Myrtle Beach Regional Economic Development Corporation.

Of that updated number, 91,298 have concentrated in six counties:

  • 18,332 in Greenville
  • 17,683 in Horry
  • 16,757 in Charleston
  • 15,912 in Richland
  • 11,913 in York
  • 10,683 in Beaufort

The MBREDC said some reasons people move to South Carolina include weather, lifestyle, employment and business opportunities.

Five-year numbers from the Census Bureau in 2022 showed that around 121,000 residents moved to South Carolina from other states.
