SUMTER, S.C. (WOLO)– A Sumter man has been arrested after police say he was connected to a bank robbery on Saturday morning.
Sumter Police Department say officers received a call at about 11:15 a.m. to a Wells Fargo after a man attempted to make a transaction before giving a teller a note demanding money and threatening harm.
Police say no weapon was presented during the encounter.
An undisclosed amount of money was handed over before the man was seen getting into a car leaving the bank on April 19.
With the help of the Sumter County Sheriff’s Office, the driver and vehicle were located at a local business and the man who was identified as Marion Kelly III was later found at a Broad Street motel.
Both men were placed in custody and the stolen money was found hidden inside the suspect’s clothing.
However, the driver was later released after investigation findings determined he provided a ride to the suspect who was a motel patron, but was not involved in the planning or commission of the robbery.
The suspect, Marion Kelly III, 53, of Dorsey Drive, who was out on bond on a 2022 armed robbery charge, is now charged with armed robbery for Saturday’s incident.
He is being held at the county detention center.
