Study: Fungi could be used to build homes

(CNN)– There’s a chance people could eventually live in mushroom houses although they probably wouldn’t look like the ones on “The Smurfs.”

According to a study in the “Cell Reports Physical Science” journal, it could be possible to live in homes that are created out of fungi and bacteria.

Researchers in Montana developed the root-like structure that links fungal networks in the soil, and said they came up with a framework to grow a living, self-repairing building material.

The study says this could lead to construction that is more environmentally-friendly than cement.
