Scammers target Newberry County church members

NEWBERRY COUNTY, S.C. (WOLO)– Scammers are using Midlands churches to target victims, according to NCSO.

Newberry County deputies say church members are getting text messages and emails from people claiming to be their pastors, asking for money for various emergencies.

Deputies say the scammers ask for gift cards instead of cash or online payments.

If you get one of these messages, deputies say, do not respond and report it to law enforcement immediately.
