Live Monitoring of Security Cameras in Effect

Columbia, S.C.  (WOLO)  —  Monitoring suspicious activity, investigating suspects and preventing crime before it happens via live-monitoring of security cameras is part of a new approach local police are taking to keep the public safe.

It’s the latest effort by Columbia Police and Carey Shealy’s Statewide Security Systems that focuses on crime reduction and prevention. Some 200 cameras in Five Points, a downtown Columbia area known for incidents of violent crime, are up and running.  However, not until this past weekend were they being monitored in real time, by real people. Officials say while the camera system works, it is much more effective when live eyes are looking through the camera lenses.

Police will assess this past weekend’s effort to determine if live monitoring should be maintained long-term.
