May is National Stroke Awareness Month, and the South Carolina Dept. of Public Health (DPH) is recognizing the stroke care and prevention efforts.

When a stroke happens, something is blocking the blood supply to part of the brain or a blood vessel in the brain bursts, according to DPH officials. Part of the brain may become damaged or die because of a stroke.

South Carolina ranks in the top 10 in the nation for the highest death rate from a stroke as of 2022, according to data collected from the CDC.

“South Carolina is considered the ‘buckle’ of the belt, as we have some of the highest cases. People who live in rural communities have a higher likelihood of developing diseases that lead to stroke, such as heart disease. Supporting professionals who serve rural communities ensures that residents have access to the best care possible for stroke and are educated on the steps to prevent and identify strokes at the first sign,” said Allison McElveen, DPH EMS Section’s Stroke/ST-elevation myocardial infarction (STEMI)/Sepsis Program Coordinator.

An acronym used by many to remember the signs and symptoms of a stroke could save a life. The following are signs to look out for that could mean a stroke.

  • Balance – sudden loss of balance, dizziness
  • Eyes – sudden vision changes
  • Face – sudden facial drooping, severe headache
  • Arms – sudden weakness, numbness
  • Speech – sudden trouble speaking, confusion
  • Time – call 911

Healthcare facilities across the state provide care for all stroke patients, including preventive and action care. There are several rehabilitation and research activities for patients as well.

Based on the special needs for each region, the system is divided to identify patterns and ways to improve outcomes.
