Midlands AmeriCorps programs invite residents to Day of Service

GASTON, S.C. (WOLO) – Midlands AmeriCorps groups are coming together for a day of service to recognize Martin Luther King Jr. Day.

On Saturday, January 13, community members are invited to Mission Lake, at 525 State Pond Road in Gaston, for a day of outdoor focused service activities.

AmeriCorps SC, Boy Scouts of America Indian Waters Council, City Year Columbia, SBP South Carolina, and Palmetto Conservation Foundation are hosting the event, which runs from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. The whole family is invited for a day of volunteerism and fun. Wear close-toed shoes and pack snacks and water. Lunch will be provided.

MLK Day of Service started in 1994, and it’s become the only federal holiday recognized as a “day on, not a day off.”

State AmeriCorps programs put American citizens to work helping South Carolina communities address challenges in education, disaster response and environmental stewardship, to name a few.
