Connection between Barbados, Charleston celebrated

CHARLESTON, S.C. (AP) — A four-day celebration of the connection between Barbados and Charleston is scheduled to start with a field trip for some school children.

Planters, servants and slaves from the Caribbean island of Barbados landed at what is now the Charles Towne Landing State Historic Site in Charleston and founded the Carolina Colony in 1670.

The celebration begins Thursday when 700 school children visit Magnolia Plantation and Gardens.

Other events through the weekend include receptions as well as a Bridgetown Market at Charles Towne Landing on Saturday featuring Lowcountry and Barbadian foods, crafts and performances.

On Sunday, there’s a church service, a town hall meeting and a farewell reception.
