Benedict edged by #16 Morehouse, 103-102 in overtime Monday
ATLANTA – The 16th-ranked and undefeated Morehouse College Maroon Tigers rallied from a six-point overtime deficit to nip the Benedict College Tigers, 103-102 in overtime on Monday night.
Benedict falls to 15-5 overall and 8-4 in the SIAC. Morehouse moves to 17-0 overall and 12-0 in the SIAC.
The Tigers rallied from a 12-point second-half deficit and tied the game with six seconds left in regulation on a pair of free throws by Dimitri Cook to knot the score at 92.
In overtime, Benedict scored the first six points of the extra period and had the lead in overtime until the Maroon Tigers took a 102-101 lead with nine seconds left on a layup by Tyrius Walker and was fouled on the play. A technical foul was called on Morehouse when fans rushed the court with six seconds still on the clock. Cairo Brown sank the free throw to tie the game at 102. Walker sank his free throw for a 103-102 lead. Benedict had one last-ditch attempt, but Morehouse stole an inbounds pass with less than a second left.
Brown led the Tigers with 28 points, hitting a season-high seven 3-pointers on the night. He scored 20 points in the second half and overtime. Cook and Brandon Morris added 17 points each.
Walker led the Maroon Tigers with 47 points. Martravious Little added 25 points.
Benedict had an 11-9 lead early in the contest, but Morehouse scored the next nine points, and Benedict never led again until overtime. The Maroon Tigers had a 37-34 lead at the half. Benedict tied the game at 41 early in the second half, but Morehouse pulled ahead with a 13-2 run. A 3-pointer by Walker gave the Maroon Tigers their largest lead, 61-49, with 12:36 on the clock.
Benedict chipped away at the lead and got a 3-pointer by Brown with 4:10 left to make it 80-78. Brown hit two free throws with 15 seconds left to make it 91-90. After the Maroon Tigers sank one free throw with 14 seconds left, Cook sank two free throws with six seconds left to tie the contest.
