No Bond for Accused Killer of USC Professor
COLUMBIA, S.C. (WOLO) — 37-year-old Hank Hawes, who is charged with stabbing to death his ex-girlfriend, 36-year-old USC professor, Jennifer Wilson, remains in jail, having been denied bond. Thursday, Judge Clifton Newman denied bond for Hawes, who waived his right to appear. Newman said had the suspect showed up, he still would have denied bond. While the suspect was a no-show, dozens of friends, supporters, and colleagues of Wilson, who was recently tenured with the University, packed a Richland County courtroom. Many of them comforted each other as they heard prosecutors describe how Wilson died. Authorities say after a break-up, Hank Hawes went to Jennifer Wilson’s Shandon home in Columbia, stabbed her multiple times, then dragged her from room to room. The say he then cut his wrists, superficially, to make police think the blood on his clothes was his and not the victim’s. According to investigators, hours later, Hawes called a witness and confessed. Wilson’s immediately family was not present in court. They plan to bury her next week in her home state of Missouri. Meanwhile, an intimate campus memorial will be held at USC Friday.
