Friday marks 81st anniversary of D-Day

 

 

(CNN)– Friday, June 6, marks the 81st anniversary of D-Day.

On June 6, 1944, tens of thousands of troops from the United States, the U.K., France, and Canada landed on five stretches of the Normandy coastline beaches.

According to the South Carolina Military Museum, it was one of the most pivotal battles of World War 2 and the largest amphibious landings of the time.

It laid the foundations for the allies to defeat Nazi Germany in World War 2.
