Ads will now be on Whatsapp

(CNN)– Facebook’s parent company, Meta has changed its mind, Whatsapp will no longer be ad-free.

The app long used by users to chat with family and friends will now feature promos in the “updates” section.

Roughly one-and-a-half billion people use that feature in the app every day.

Officials say Whatsapp will gather some data on its users including location and default language to help determine which ads should be targeted.

But the company says it will not target message content and has no plans to put ads in personal messages or chat sections.

Meta bought Whatsapp in 2014 for $19 billion.
