RICHLAND COUNTY, S.C. (WOLO)– Richland County Sheriff Leon Lott says a former deputy has been arrested on charges of petit larceny.
The sheriff’s department says on July 16, during an internal audit, it was discovered that there was a $410.00 cash discrepancy from the sex offender registry receipts.
The information was then turned over to the sheriff’s department criminal investigations division to open a case.
During the investigation it was revealed that 31-year-old former deputy Jessica Way was stealing small amounts of money at a time to not draw attention, while processing sex offenders who were going in to register, says RCSD.
On July 24, Way was terminated, and when questioned she confessed to law enforcement about what she did.
Way was arrested on Monday, July 28, for petit larceny under $2,000.00 and booked into the Alvin S. Glen Detention Center.
She was with the sheriff’s department for just under 4 years, serving as a deputy in the sex offender registry unit.
